Good evening everyone,

Sad to say that the news we were expecting from the RFU came through earlier today. Following suspention of all rugby activities by Devizes RFC earlier this week, the RFU has now officially ended rugby for season 2019/2020 - you can read the article on their website using this link.

So I miss out on the opportunity to say a few words at the end of season celebrations we would be having, in a few weeks, just the other side of Easter. The pace of events has been a real shock, but we adapt and we overcome. It's what we do.

So here are a few words from me, on behalf of Devizes RFC:

 - first, to our players. Every man woman boy and girl who pulled on a Devizes shirt and played for the badge this year has done us proud - well done. Some of our age groups were into finals; our Development team (mens 2nd XV) were close to a play-off spot. The ladies have secured rugby in their league, and the Saddlebacks (mens 1st XV) have secured 4th in theirs - well done them. At times we had 23 names on the injured or missing list - 23! Well done indeed.

 - second, to our supporters. This club is nothing without you. Whether you are a volunteer, an officer, a coach, a manager or even a Welsh groundsman: we salute you, you have our deepest and most heartfelt gratitude. The same is true of our parents, our vicepresidents and of course our sponsors, who have once again been magnificent. Thank you seems wholly inadequate for the passion and commitment you bring, week after week, season after season. And a word also to our hosts, Devizes Sports Club: may your Guinness always be cold, and your pasties hot (hot, not warm).

- thirdly, to the future. The south will rise again. We will reboot, as the RFU says. Plans already being made. Coaches working out how to get players active, engaged, fit and strong whilst social distancing. Please don't be tempted by that lovely green sward though...stay safe, and when it's blown through we will immediately start up with friendlies, socials, and general shinanegans.

Not everyone will be able to keep cheerful through these days, weeks and months. There will be pressure on all of us. So be kind. Be kind to yourselves, and those around you. And we are here to listen, if you need to talk. We are stronger together.

Finally - end of season festivities are postponed, not cancelled. We will see you soon.

With very best regards,

Chris
