Devizes welcomed a strong Oakmedians side to the Chivers Ground on what at first seemed a perfect day for rugby. The ladies were defeated heavily in the away fixture earlier on in the season and were determined to show what they are capable of and right the wrongs that had gone before.
Devizes started well and forced a knock on by Oakmedians from the kick off, but Devizes failed to capitalise from the resulting scrum giving away a penalty. This was then further punished when from the resulting lineout Oakmedians swung the ball down the line and their impressive centre broke through the line for a try under the posts which was converted.
After defeat in the away fixture it would have been easy for heads to drop but Devizes came back with a hearty response, an excellent box kick by Denise Warbutton was not fielded and the ball was shipped down the line for Natalie A'Bear to show her pace outstrip the defence on the outside. Warbutton missed the conversion from out wide.
Devizes were now taking the game to Oakmedians and showing some determined, impressive carries from the likes of Lauren Nelson, Emma Matthews and Gemma Schrader.
Devizes doubled their try count 5 minutes later with a series of rucks and attempts for the line which were finished off by second row Leah Reynolds who dived over the line to take the lead.
Oakmedians wilfully fought back to take the lead back after a couple of missed tackles led to the centre going over the line for another.
With the match back and forth it was unfortunate that Devizes were the architects of their own downfall for the next try when a clearance pass from the back of a ruck on the 15m didn’t get to its player. Oakmedians added the score when Devizes committed too many players to the blind side leaving an overlap in the open for the easy score.
Conditions were now tough with driving rain and once again Devizes let Oakmedians in for a score. When put under pressure in their own half they turned the ball over and Oakmedians spread it down the line to go over in the corner making the score 10 – 22 at half time.
The rain then put paid to any type of contest as the ball became akin to a bar of soap and both teams struggled in the muddy conditions. Unfortunately an Oakmedians player went down injured (we wish her well) and an ambulance was called so the game was moved to the second pitch where it petered out.
A great contest played in good spirit.
Devizes Ladies are always looking for new players. All ages from 17 above, skills and abilities welcome. Training 7 - 8.30.
