On what was a sunny but chilly remembrance Sunday, Devizes welcomed Yeovil Ladies to the Chivers Ground.

Yeovil were sitting one place ahead of the Ladies in the standings so Devizes knew this would be a tough test.

An impeccably observed minute silence was followed by some really good rugby by Devizes which led to a penalty on the Yeovil 22. Up stepped full back Denise Warbutton who coolly dispatched it between the posts for a 3 nil lead.

Devizes had the impetus and were making inroads in to Yeovil territory with some strong runs and with some good defence they forced a series of mistakes from the Yeovil backline to earn a 5m scrum.

A resulting penalty was awarded to Yeovil who inexplicably decided to run the ball out from their own 5m line and a botched a clearance kick. This kick was fielded by Devizes leading to a series of charges at the line only to be held up over.

From the resulting 5m scrum a charge by Gemma Schader led to a series of rucks and the ball worked its way down the back line to centre Abi Dalton who dived over the line. The try was converted well by Warburton to make it 10 nil.

Devizes continued to take the game to Yeovil and were thwarted by a last ditch tackle after a barn storming line break by Chloe Wallington

Another fantastic break followed from Sian Stevens who showed her pace to make a swift break down the left, she was tackled by the full back who then went off of her feet to concede a penalty.

Having kicked to the line the resulting lineout was lost but some good tackling led by Jo Emslie forced a turnover and a series of rucks saw Kate Stradling going powerfully over the line. Warbutton kicked the tricky conversion to make it 17 -0 at the half time break.

The second half was an entirely different ball game; Yeovil came out of the changing room a different side and were rewarded when some poor tackling by Devizes let them in over the line.

Yeovil were now the team in the ascendency and were making good territory in to the Devizes half only to be repelled by some excellent Devizes defensive pressure. However, it was Yeovil who added the next score after an exceptional show and go from their full back.

This made for a pulsating finish with Devizes tackling their hearts out and repelling several attacks and eventually the final whistle went with a Yeovil knock on.  A good win by Devizes 17 -10.

A good work out for the Ladies and a stiff test on a cold Autumn day which they came through with flying colours.
