In mid-March, as part of the national response to Covid-19 and RFU guidance, the club management had to suspend all rugby activity and social activities at Devizes Sports Club until further notice. As the situation develops, we will publish updates regularly on this page so remember to keep checking back.

With immediate effect, all rugby activity at Devizes RFC is to cease until further notice. Keep your eyes on the website and social media for more news.

DRFC Lead Coaches,

You will have been pleased to hear that the RFU have moved to Stage E of their return to rugby roadmap. As with previous stages, it is important we move together as a club, and with some guidelines specific to Devizes RFC in place.

Yet again the changes necessitate some in depth preparation from us all, so I apologise in advance for what is to follow!

Lead Coach Obligations

Please can lead coaches complete and confirm the following:

Arranging Fixtures

Keen as we are to get games going, we need to prioritise player safety above all else.

Considering players have a) not played contact rugby since at least March and b) had the last month without any training, the club is establishing a policy whereby no adapted contact rugby games can be arranged until 16th January. 

This applies to ALL squads without exception. Ready4Rugby games can still be arranged.

To help coaches plan optimal preparation for contact rugby we are holding a coaches webinar on Tuesday 8th December at 2000, where myself and James Gaiger will take you through our program design to ensure our players will be safe to return to contact in a few weeks. Zoom link to follow, all coaches and assistant coaches welcome so please share.

Training Logistics

Training times and pitch allocations will remain unaltered from pre-lockdown 2. Players MUST still book to train without exception. 

Club Facilities

For now all facilities remain closed, with the exception of the referees rooms being used as toilets. The return to rugby group will work through the RFU clubhouse guidance with the goal of safely opening what we can in preparation for fixtures.

Thanks to you all for taking the time and energy to keep our players involved over the past months. I personally think we have all done a great job - let's keep it up - the end may be in sight!

The club have completed all relevant risk assessments and plans (as per the attached documents) and training under stage C begins this week, players/parents get in touch with your squad coaches for full details of how to book in.

Update: 21st May, 2020

Following the government's announcement on extended outdoor exercise we would like to confirm that at this stage Devizes RFC grounds remain closed, and members should not be using them for individual or pairs training. 

Irrespective of Covid-19 guidance, the decision to keep the grounds out of bounds is a consequence of extensive off-season grounds work being undertaken, to ensure the playing and training surfaces are in top condition ready for the new season.

We would strongly encourage players of all ages to keep both their skills and conditioning up. To help with this Director of Rugby Joe Alford has created Senior and Junior online platforms containing strength and conditioning coaching, workouts and programs. Fully paid members can access these resources for free by contacting Joe at jalford@southernsport.co.uk

As a club we are committed to returning to playing rugby as soon as possible but we respect the guidelines provided by the RFU and government to make playing as safe as possible for players, parents & spectators. To this end, we will publish all guidelines and updates on this page so please check back regularly to keep yourselves fully up to date.

Update: May 11th, 2020


To enable this and to ensure all levels of the club maintain the same standards, the committee have formed a task force focused on achieving our return to rugby.  This includes Chris Butler (Youth Chair) Keith Butler (Ladies’ Chair) and Joe Alford (Director of Rugby) along with Jon Thompson (Immediate Past President).


To help the club plan, prepare and provide for the additional costs incurred in returning to rugby as fast as possible, the club has not only applied successfully to Sport England for a grant to meet some operational overheads during the lockdown but also announced that the "100 Club" will be replaced with a new ‘2020 Club’ monthly draw.  This new monthly draw will enable members to sign up to support the club for the next 20 months (or longer) at £5 a month, or in certain multiples up to £20 per month.  A range of cash prizes will be won every month and the balance will help to fund the exceptional costs incurred by the club in complying with RFU / Government requirements.
